William Leader, 1767-1828 the father of John Temple Leader. The tomb is also a Grade 11 Listed structure. Buried here is William Leader who died aged 25 in 1826, presumably his son, Mrs Mary Leader who died aged 73 in 1838 and a Edward Lowther Crofton who died aged 36 in 1821 are also buried here, according to Arthur Crotch's map (11) he is titled a Captain. William Leader was born at Putney Hill Villa in 1767, he was a manufacture of some sort, the details of which are not available. He was the Whig MP for Camelford in Cornwall and Winchelsea in East Sussex. He and his wife had four daughters and four sons, two of the sons died in infancy. William junior was killed at Oxford aged 25 in a coaching accident. John Temple, the only surviving son inherited the family wealth. John Temple Leader was the Whig MP for Bridgwater in Somerset in 1835 and the MP for Westminster from 1837 to 1847. He married Contessa Maria Louisa di Leone in London in 1867. The Contessa was a widow. He moved to Tuscany and lived there until his death 50 years later in1903. Queen Victoria visited him there at his castle in Vincigliata near Fiesole. John Leader had a serious accident at the age of 86 and died in 1903 at the age of 92. He and the Contessa are buried in the cemetery of Miniato al Monte in Florence. He left a plot of land on Putney Embankment which was named after him, Leaders Gardens is now a public park.
The tomb of William Leader and his family.
Stratford Canning 1744-1787 died aged 43 and also buried here is Canning's wife Mehetabel Nee Patrick, 1749-1831, she died aged 82. Canning's father disapproved of the marriage because she was of Irish descent, she was born in Dublin. Stratford Canning was disinherited from his father's will. Stratford and Mehetabel lived in Clements Lane, in the City of London. The couple had one daughter and four sons. One son, Charles Fox Canning was Aide-de-Camp to the Duke of Wellington, he died at The Battle of Waterloo on the 18th June, 1815 aged 33. The slab states "Beneath are deposited the mortal remains Stratford Canning Esq., late of London merchant who died May 22nd 1787 aged 43. And also of Mehetabel his wife born May 5th 1749 died July 13th 1831 whose faithful attachment to his memory ceased only with her life and whose truly Christian reliance on a merciful Creator failed not in the severest trials. The memorial of virtue is immortal because it is known with God and with men. When it is present men take example at it, and when it is gone they desire it." (20).
South side: Beneath are deposited the remains of Elizabeth wife of George Henry Barnett Esq., Note: "Their youngest son becoming the First Lord Stratford de Radclyffe, the great ambassador" (21). (20).
Stratford Canning's tomb.
Joseph Lucas, 1758-1833. Two of Joseph Lucas' nieces are buried here, Anna Maria 1772-1858 and Mary Kent 1759-1849, Mary's husband, William Kent is also buried here 1773-1850. There were two monuments in St Mary's church on Putney High Street to the family, the monuments were destroyed in the 1973 fire (3). I have found Anna Maria Lucas on the 1851 Census, although she is down as Anne Maria Lucas. Below is a photo of the census, and I absolutely love that we can see the actual Census form and how familiar it looks to the modern day Census.
Of course it's incredibly hard to read, so here's the transcript of it.
Above, is the 1851 Census entry for Anna Marie Lucas, niece of Joseph Lucas. As you can see on Census night, she had 15 year old Mary J Sowden as a visitor and three servants, Jane E Sowden, presumably Mary's mother age 61, May Tickner, 52 another servant and Catherine Tickner, I'll assume again she's May's daughter who is aged 22.
The tomb of Joseph Lucas.
Daniel Pettiward, the Reverend Pettiward 1765 to 1853. His tomb is surrounded by metal railings and unfortunately like many headstones and tombs the writing is illegible. Update, I cleaned the tombstone in October 2024 using a broom and have exposed the engraving, see the photo below.
The cleaned headstone of the Reverend Daniel Pettiward has only his name and year of death engraved upon it. However, according to Philip Evison's research it seems that Roger Pettiward, father of Daniel, is also interred in the vault (3a). The Reverend was vicar to two parishes in Suffolk. He died in Bury St Edmunds while travelling to London aged 88. He was the son of Roger Mortlock Pettiward, who sold the land the cemetery occupies to the parish of Putney.
Above is The Rev. Pettiward's tomb before I cleaned it.
Another Reverend buried in the cemetery is the Rev. Richard John St. Aubyn, 1807 to 1849 who died at the young age of 42. He was the 13th of 15 children whose father was Sir John, 5th and final Baronet of St. Aubyn who died in 1839 (3). The Reverend's mother was Martha Nicholls and I cannot find any details for her. The father of Rev. Aubyn has been recorded as saying that he can't remember the mothers of the first two of his children except that they were Italian! (3)
Interestingly, Rev. Aubyn is descended from the family that owns St. Michael's Mount in Cornwall. The family run the island on a day to day business and still live there in the castle, while the National Trust oversee the upkeep and conservation of the mount. (17)
It's sad to see that today the Rev. St Aubyn's grave is completely overgrown and hidden. Or at least it was, here's a photo I took today (in November 2024) of the Rev's grave. You can just make out the railing in the middle of the photo. It's completely covered in ivy, so I will start to remove the ivy in the coming days/weeks. Watch this blog!
Over the last couple of days (November 2024) I've removed the ivy and cleaned the stone with a soft brush. The grave can now be seen from the path so hopefully the groundsmen will do their job and keep it free of overgrowth as they're supposed to do!
Here's a photo taken by Philip Evison, c1990s (3a).Hopefully when I've finished it will be as easy as this to see. The grave is at the top right hand side of the cemetery as you enter. If you follow the path in front of you it will take you straight to it. I've been trying to decipher the lettering around the edge of the tomb, at first I thought it was in Latin because the Gothic lettering made it so hard to read, but I've been studying the photos that I took of the letters and as you can see below they thankfully appear to be in English.
The lettering says 'In a vault beneath rest the mortal remains of Rev. Richard J. St. Aubyn, son of
Sir John St. Aubyn, of Clowance, in the County of Cornwall, Baronet.
He died at Lime Grove in this parish Jany. 30. 1849, in the 42nd year of his age.'
Today (February 2025) I was pleased to see that Enable, the company who look after the burial ground, has responded to my request to tidy up the Rev's grave.
And again another Reverend. The Reverend William Carmalt, 1777 to 1850. The Reverend ran a school for boys in Putney on Carmalt Gardens, off the Upper Richmond Road. I've yet to find his grave or headstone, I will keep looking.
Lt. Gen George Parker, 1760 to 1828. 6th Baron de Hochpied. He was the son of the Ambassador to Turkey - Sir James Porter. George Parker's mother was Clarissa Catherine de Hochpied, she was the daughter of the Dutch Ambassador. George Parker's had a sister, Anna who was born in 1758 and died in 1832. Lt. Gen Porter was in the army from 1793 until 1820, he later became the Whig MP for Stockbridge in Hampshire. George Parker later set up home with a divorcee, Lady Grosvenor. (3)
Below is a recent photo of Baron de Hochpied's gravestone. As you can see it needs some work done on it to remove some of the moss, which I'll do as soon as I can.

James Scarth, 1769 to 1828.
James Scarth was a property developer and the owner of large areas of land. His son Henry Scarth, born in Putney in 1802 and died in 1870, he built Parkfields which is on the west side of Coalcroft Road also Charlwood Road, Scarth Road and Station Road in Barnes. Henry Scarth also built two Putney Pubs, The Arab Boy built in 1849 on Upper Richmond Road. The pub was named after Scarth's servant from the Middle East, whose name was Yussef Sirrie. The other pub Henry Scarth built was The Quill pub nearby. Yussef became the landlord of The Quill, Scarth left his estate to him on his death (11). Henry Scarth is buried in Putney Lower Common Cemetery. Due to a challenge on the estate of James Scarth a decision was made to exhume the body, however, for reasons unknown, his coffin was not in the burial ground and it remains missing to this day! Other members of the Scarth family buried in Putney Old Burial Ground are James' wife Alice Nee North, 1761 to 1828, his daughter Ann, 1804 to 1827. (3).
The following is from the microfiche of East Surrey Family History Society (20). "Sacred to the memory of Mr James Scarth many years an inhabitant of this parish and of No. 2 Lyons Inn, Strand London". (According to Wikipedia, Lyons Inn was attached to Inner Temple, one of the Inns of Court). "Attorney-at-Law who died on the 10th June 1828 in his 59th year. Also Alice his wife who died in the month of December 1828 in her 68th year. Also Ann Scarth daughter of the above who died on the 30th December 1823 in her 24th year". Note the discrepancy in Ann's date of death, she either died in 1823 or 1827 aged 23.
James Scarth's headstone, sadly almost impossible to decipher.
After some time of looking, I have finally found James Scarth's son Henry's grave. I don't why it took me so long to find it, it's a pretty large slab in the middle of Putney Lower Common cemetery. Here are a couple of photos of it. It also mentions his father and mother. The grave of Henry Scarth, simply inscribed Henry Scarth died 16th December, 1870 age 69. The inscription on the other side of the slab states Louisa, last surviving daughter of James Scarth and Alice, his wife who died in Paris on the 26th of November, 1857. I assume that it was Louisa who died in Paris. Both Louisa and Alice are buried in the same plot as the missing body of James Scarth in Putney Old Burial Ground. The end piece on the slab states Robert Heath of Heatherbell, Putney, who died on the 28th of February, 1887 age 85. I've no idea who Robert Heath was but I note that he was roughly the same age as Henry Scarth, and the fact that Henry Scarth never married, I am going to assume that they were close friends, or more, especially considering he's buried in the same grave as Henry. I actually think that their relationship was a gay one and so this may make them part of the hidden history of the LGBTQ community. I've since discovered a little more about Robert Heath from the census of 1871. He was a widower with a daughter named Bathsheba. Heatherbell, seems to be the name of his house, although I can't find anything when I search the internet. The above photo shows how close Bathsheba Heath's grave is to her father's grave is. Both are made of pink granite.
Other graves in Putney Old Burial Ground.
1. Mary Fielder and Thomas Fielder and four children. Thomas died in 1791 aged 38, Mary died in 1784. Because of the difference in their ages I'm going to assume Mary was Thomas' mother. The four children died between 1837 and 1854, no details apart from their initials but it appears they were adults when they died. (20)
2. Fanny and James Stewart and their six children. James died in 1837 aged 66, Horatio died aged 10 in 1825. No details available for the remaining children. (14)
From the microfiche (20) "In memory of Mr James Stewart late of this parish who died 10th June 1837 aged 66 years. Also Horatio Stewart son of the above who died .... May 1823 or 1825. Also five of his children who died in their infancy. Also Mrs Fanny Stewart wife of the above who died 15th November 1818 aged 63 years. (20) There's some kind of error here, although the names and dates match, there is one discrepancy for Horatio's year of death, it implies that Fanny Stewart gave birth to Horatio when she was in her late 50s.
3. The Chapman family consisting of four members. There is another grave of the Chapman family nearby with William Chapman, died 1864, Margaret Chapman (no details), another William Chapman, died 1891, and Anna (no details). In total that's eight members of the Chapman family in two graves.
From the details of East Surrey Family History Society ESFHS (20):
(top slab, so presumably a table tomb) Joseph Chapman died 26th July 1792 age 47. Jerimiah Chapman died 5th December 1792 age (30)? Elizabeth Chapman died 30th March 1795 age 74. Tyson Chapman died 26th April 1799 age 85. Tyson Chapman (same name different person, possibly his son?) died 25th October 1824 age 77. Elizabeth Chapman died 16th January 1827 aged 85. Charles Chapman died 18th December 1842 aged 59.
North side: "In memory of Elizabeth widow of Charles Gaston Williams Esq., who died January 21st 1876 aged 92 years. Sacred to the memory of Thomas Chapman Esq., of Wandsworth died 4th March 1844 age 64 years.
South side: "Sacred to the memory of Caroline daughter of Charles and Caroline Chapman who died July 31st 1865 aged (?) years. Sacred to the memory of Joseph son of Charles and Caroline Chapman who died July 21st 1865 aged 40". So it appears that the two children of Caroline and Charles Chapman died ten days apart.
East end: In memory of Caroline widow of Charles Chapman died 1st October 1868 aged 85 years. Note by ESFHS (20): Thomas Chapman of Wandsworth married Charlotte Wills Chapman (first cousins) of Putney December 12 1812. Mrs Chapman lies in a family vault number 22, as per Crotch's map (11) in this cemetery. A memorial window to them both is in the north aisle of St. John's church, Putney (20). I've checked in St. John's church on St. John's Road, Putney, and I can't find any window with the above dedication.
More Chapmans in another grave, "In memory of William Chapman died November 20th 1775 aged 40 years, also Mr. Henry Chapman died April 14th 1792 aged 37 years. Also John Chapman died February 6th 1790 or 1795 (typo on the microfiche) aged 43. Also Mrs. Catherine Chapman who died February 10th 1796 aged 45. Also Elizabeth Dearlove, sister to the above Mrs. Catherine Chapman who died 13th September 1835 aged 84" (20).
4. The Bradbury family consisting of four members, including two children aged five and six. John Bradbury senior was the landlord of the nearby Fox and Hounds pub and died in 1808. His son James Worthington Bradbury died in 1792 aged 5, and John junior died aged 6 in ? There is a fourth person buried here but the record is illegible, so I'm really hoping it's the children's mother. (8) Sadly it seems the mother may not be buried here, according to a register (20) the burial of 1798 is that of another son of John Bradbury "letter sorter at the GPO died November 1798 aged 17".
I've found what may be another child of John Bradbury senior in another Putney cemetery. Namely Putney Lower Common cemetery on the Lower Richmond Road, on the way to Barnes. The above headstone states that buried here are Samuel Worthington Bradbury who died on the 14th of September, 1861 age 74. Also his wife Elizabeth who died on the 13th of February, 1866 age 76. And Phoebe Elizabeth Bradbury who died on the 21st of August, 1873 aged what appears to be 13 years of age.
5. Ann and Thomas and their two children. Reference to be added.
6. "In memory of Elizabeth Carpenter obit October the 21st 1793 aged 65 years also several other children" (20).
7. Ann Bows and two children.
8. Watts family, three members including one child. A Sarah Watts died in 1766 sadly in a workhouse at the remarkable age of 104. Further research needed as it's not yet clear if she's buried here or even a relative of this Watts family. (14)
9. Caister family of four adults, including one child.
10. Kensington family, comprising of 14 members, it's not clear how many graves were involved for this family. Among the buried with the Kensington's are two people with the surname Warden, so possibly 16 burials including a Captain William Rawlings RN who died on the 16th December, 1918. I have searched the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) website but have been unable to find any mention of Captain Rawlings.
11. Alcock family, seven adults and one child.
"Elizabeth Jane, wife of Joseph Alcock Esq., died 27th December 1813 age 52. Richard their son died 22nd November 1802 age 9. Joseph Alcock died 2nd August 1821 aged 61. Joseph Alcock died 20th December 1822 age 30, (husband to June). John Alcock son of Joseph and June died 1st December 1883" (20).
In a nearby grave is "Alexander Belcher of the Rookery, Roehampton who departed this life February m. 1848 aged 54. Also the body of Maria his wife, second daughter of Joseph Alcock Esq., formerly of Putney born 31st March 1797 died 27th March 1870. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord" (20).
12. Siblings William Power Watts, died 19th June, 1822 aged three years and his sister Mary Watts who died 12th November, 1833 aged 10 (?) years. Their headstone is in the top right hand corner as you enter the burial ground, it's been separated from their actual burial spot. They are buried in the middle of the cemetery just to the right of the path.
Another centenarian possibly (more research needed) buried in the cemetery is Ann Williams who died in 1772 aged 109!
Most of the above family details from LA (8) or Lysons (14).
13. Stephen Morrison. The Morrison family. Stephen Morrison who died in July 1820, aged 44. Elizabeth, his daughter died in March 1819 aged eight months. His wife, Sarah Morrison went on to live until 1853 when she died aged 79 and is also buried here.
The census for 1851, has Sarah Morrison as someone who was born in Wilford (or Welford), Northamptonshire as a market gardener. It has been recorded that there were about 100 acres of land for market gardening in the south of Putney, near to Putney Heath. (14). On the census is also named Emma, who was her granddaughter, aged 20. See below for a transcript of the census. 14. John Charles Knox Borrow. John Borrow was only two years old when he died. He was born in January 1852 in Putney, baptized on the 11th of June 1852 in St. Mary's church Putney, he was buried on the 19th of April 1854 aged just two years and four months. (19). The headstone is in the south west corner, and not on top of the burial ground. My shoes are there to illustrate the size of the headstone.
15. Ann Brigden. "To the memory of Ann Brigden wife of John Brigden of this parish. Died January 1st 1829 aged 56 years". This is another uprooted headstone that's been placed flat into the ground in the south east corner. I've left my shoes in the photo so that you get an idea of the scale of the headstone.
16. Robert Howey.
According to Arthur Crotch, (11) there are three graves with a person named Howey buried in them. This is the only one I found (so far). As far as I can make out the above headstone reads "To the loving memory of Mr. Robert Howey of this parish who departed this life the 25th of May 1795 in the 55th year of his age. Also of Mrs Mary Howey, wife of the above Mr Robert Howey, who departed this life the 12th of August 1818 aged ...?" the stone is damaged and her age at death is unknown. This headstone is not in the original position and has been placed in the south east corner. See also number 75 in this list. See also entry 75 and 75a.
17. James Neighbour.
As far as I can make out, this headstone states "To the memory of Mr. James Neighbour of this parish - departed this life June 5th 1825 aged 65" "Here Neighbour, rest escaped the mortal strife. Above the joys, beyond the woes of life" Thankfully this was transcribed by the East Surrey Family History Society in 1998, because today the epitaph on the stone is almost illegible This headstone is not above the burial plot and has been placed in the south east corner. (20)
18. Simeon Warner, no headstone yet found. His headstone was transcribed in 1998 (20) and it states "In memory of Simeon Warner Esq., who died May 26th 1801 aged 63 years. Also of Constance Warner wife to the above who died February 15th 1803 aged 65 years".
19, John Boissier. Headstone not yet found but it's inscribed (20) "John Boissier Esq., who died 7th May 1770 age 71. Also of Susanna Judith Boissier his wife who died on the 26th August 1756 aged 41. And of their daughter who died an infant" The source of the above has also stated that John Daniel Boissier was born in Geneva in 1699. He was the owner of "Lime Grove". They go on to say that the infant daughter was buried in June and that Mrs Boissier was buried September 4th 1756, which is before the burial ground was opened. So I'm going to presume that when her husband died in 1770, she and her child were reinterred to be with him. I'm further guessing that she and her infant child had been buried in the graveyard of St. Mary's church, Putney High Street. It appears that Mrs Boissier died three months after her infant daughter.
20. Jane Lang. "In memory of Jane wife of Henry Lang of Montague Square......who departed this life 11th July 1845 aged 66 years. Here rests a woman good without pretence. Blest with plain reason and with sober sense. Passion and pride were to her soul unknown. Convinced that virtue only is our own". "Also in memory of Henry Lang Esp., JP for the County of Middlesex and Deputy Lieutenant for the Tower Hamlets, late of Montagu Square who died at Cookham, Berks., 4th May 1866 in his 93rd year". Headstone not yet found.
21. Rosamund Lynn-Smart. "Sacred to the memory of Rosamund wife of William Lynn-Smart of Trewitt House, Northumberland who died at Putney 17th March 1841. The wisdom that is from above first pure then peaceable and easy to be intreated full or mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy". "Also to the memory of Elizabeth widow of John Longley Esq., late of Rochester, mother of the above who died at Putney aged 91 years September 23rd 1845. Her children rise and call her blessed. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord henceforth: Yea saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours" "Catherine Longley daughter of the above John and Elizabeth Longley born at Rochester.....July 1787 died at Bath March 22nd 1870 Them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with Him. Martha Longley the last surviving of the family of the above John and Elizabeth Longley, born at Rochester October 26th 1788 died at Burghfield, Berkshire October 22nd 1872. For me to live in Christ, to die is gain". Note by East Surrey Family History Society: Charles Thomas Longley first Bishop of Ripon, was a son of the above Elizabeth Longley. A stained glass window to her memory is in the East end of Bishop West's chapel in the parish church, placed there by her son. She lived in Putney for many years. (20) Headstone not yet found.
The memorial stained glass window mentioned above to Elizabeth Longley in St. Mary's church Putney.
22. Henry Edward Hayman.
"In a vault beneath this stone are deposited the remains of Henry Edward Hayman Esq., late of Putney, deceased who departed this life the .... day of October 1811 aged 65 years (20).
23. Joseph Berger. "In memory of Mr. Joseph Berger of this parish who departed this life 12th July 1827 aged 78 (20).
24. John and Elizabeth Thwaites. "In memory of five children of John and Elizabeth Thwaites of this parish. Louisa died 30th November 1823 aged four days. Sarah E died June 11th 1826 aged five years and four months. Edward I died June 19th 1826 aged two years and four months. William H died June 22nd 1826 aged six months and seven days. John E died June 24th 1831 aged four years. Also the above John Thwaites who died December 18th 1837 aged 61 years (20) Note by (20) that the footstone of this grave has been placed in front of Souster, plot 66 as numbered by Crotch. Sadly three of these children died in the same week in the month of June 1826 (20). The children may have died from the Asiatic cholera plague of 1826 which arrived in London that same year (21).
25. James Miller. "In memory of James Miller of this parish who died March 11th 1855 aged 67 years".
26. Jane Moody. "Sacred to the memory of Jane Moody who died 13th July 1826 in her 50th year. Also Reuben Moody husband of the above who died 15th March 1850 in his 77th year. Also Ann Reuben second wife of the said Mr. Reuben Moody who died August 28th 1866 in the 88th year of her age" (20). This is not a typing error, it appears on the microfiche (20) that Mrs Ann Reuben is not recorded as Mrs Ann Moody. I don't know if this an error on the register or by the East Surrey Family Society (20).
26a. "Sacred to the memory of Mr Thomas Moody Esq., of Roehampton who departed this life December the 28th 1839 aged 39 years. Also Mrs Mary Ann Collinson sister of the above who died the 31st of August 1849 in the 75th year of her age" (20).
27. Mary Brown. "Sacred to the memory of Mary Brown who died July 14th 1829 aged 27. Also Sarah Brown, mother of the above who died .... November 1831 aged 52 years. Also John Brown, husband of the above who died ..... November 1832 aged ... years. (20).
The headstone of Mary, Sarah and John Brown. It's partially missing on the left side.
28. Jane Spencer. "To the memory of Jane Spencer who died February 23rd 1823 aged 60 years (20).
28b. "In memory of Frances Spencer many years an inhabitant of this parish, who departed this life on the 18th day of July 1807 in the 66th year of his age. Also Mrs Sarah Spencer wife of the above who died on the 20th of December 1819 aged 84 years" (20).
29. John Gill. "In memory of John Gill who died November .... 1791 aged four years and nine months" (20).
30. Mary Scott. "Sacred to the memory or Mrs. Mary Scott, wife of Robert Scott of this parish who died May 30th 1815 aged 40 years. (20).
Above, the headstone of Mary and Robert Scott. (my photo).
31. John Bigg. "in memory of John Bigg - the rest is unreadable. The footstone reads: JB 1788" (20).

Also Ann relict of Mr. John Charlwood late of this parish who died 23rd of August 1853 in her 81st year.
33b. "Sacred to the memory of Mr William Charlwood of this parish, who died February the 13th 1830 aged 53 years. Born October the 23rd 1838 died August the 9th 1843" (20).
33c. "Elizabeth Charlwood...................William Charlwood .............Motley Charlwood ............. Also of Mrs Hannah Charlwood widow of George Motley Charlwood who departed this life June the 21st 1831 in the eighty ninth year of her age" (20).

Note, the surname Fourdrinier appears among the names of Huguenots who fled France and settled in Wandsworth. (20).
Today (February 16th 2025) I found this headstone below for a Burton, it's difficult to read but mentions a baby who died at aged 8 months and the date the 9th of May, so this must be baby Emma's details. Also that this is the headstone the above people. Sadly, this headstone was covered in moss (cleaned by me) and hidden beneath a plant pot. It's immediately behind the mortuary building.
The headstone above showing baby Emma's details.
105. ".........Rev. John Adams A.M......He died the 16th of November 1813 aged 64 years". It's been noted by the transcribe that the stone is very worn but that the Rev. was born in Aberdeen and was a minister of a Scottish church in Hatton Garden and that he opened a school in Putney on the site of the former Cromwell Place and that he died in Putney. (20).

As a mark of respect due to her merit and as an inducement to other servants to endeavour to obtain similar distinction by similar means this stone has been inscribed by the orders of Sir John Duck in whose service she died". As the transcriber notes her name may have been Sarah Malthus housekeeper to Sir John Dick Bart., at Roehampton. A monument exists in the north gallery of the parish church to the memory of Sir John Dick and it has the same description of the subject. I will try and photograph it at some point. (20).

Just a note to see that although I have taken all the above from reference number 20 as accurately as possible , I have in parts corrected slight spelling errors, used punctuation and corrected clumsy grammar to make it easier to read.

Below are some photos of headstones but there is no record I've yet found of the people buried beneath them.
1. All I can make out is "memory of John Campbell MD born September died December". On Arthur Crotch's map (11) this is numbered 109 and he is buried to the left of the path that is on the far right as you enter the cemetery.
2. I think it says John Cumbles or Gumbles or Cumbers or Gumbers and I can just make out "8 months". There is nothing on Arthur Crotch's map (11) that resembles this name.Comparison old and new photos of the burial ground.
Below is the 1936 photo which states "The Bowman tomb 129" (15). The 129 states the number that Arthur Crotch assigned to the graves in his survey of 1933. (11). "William Bowman Esq., of Roehampton obit 20th of June 1794 aged 64. Charles Bowman Esq., of Oules Hill, Hertfordshire, only son of the above, obit 26th of May 1817 aged 39" (20). "Oules" is an error made by the person doing the transcript, if you look at the headstone below, you can see it actually says "owles" and there is an Owles Lane in Hertfordshire.
Below is a modern photo (November 2024) taken by the author, showing where the Bowman tomb had been, which is immediately behind the bench.
The slab from the top of Charles Bowman's was placed in front of the entrance to Putney Pantry. Also in front of the Putney Pantry cafe is the tombstone of William Charlwood and his family. See below. Below is a photo of where Bowman and Charlwood's headstones are placed in front of the door to the Putney Pantry. Mr Charlwood tombstone is immediately in front of the doors, Mr Bowman's tombstone is after the cobblestones and next to the portable signage.
I think it may be considered that the acts of the council, in 1963, to remove so many headstones and then place them in the corner out of the way in order to make a park, an act of vandalism. In 1963 the burial ground was already almost two hundred years old and contained so much of Putney's history it's almost beyond belief that they thought that this act was justified. Tombs were dismantled and stone thrown away (3a), some of the slabs from the top of table tombs were removed and placed in the ground in the entrance to the Putney Pantry cafe of St. Mary's church, which many hundreds of people step on with out the slightest curiosity to see what it is they're walking over. Of the 114 headstones only nine remain in situ (3a).
Biodiversity.
A "site of local importance for nature conservation" and one of the UK's most rare of wildflowers grows in Putney Old Burial Ground, namely the Jersey Cudweed, a protected wildflower under the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981 (10).
However, you'll find it hard to spot because it doesn't appear to be growing there anymore. I can't help but wonder did the groundsmen inadvertently dig it all up, who knows?
The burial ground is home to six very large London Plane trees and another six equally large oak trees. There are a couple of birch trees and a fir tree. The grounds are not particularly well kept, and one grave in particular (Rev. St Aubyn) has been allowed to become completely hidden by ivy, which I would have thought to be breaking the contract for any company charged with looking after the grounds. There are lots of various bushes, including holly, mosses and ferns around the burial ground. Stag beetles have also apparently been spotted there. (10).

I've tried to contact the Society several times but their website keeps rejecting my message. So if you know a way to contact them please let them know! I just want to thank them for their wonderful research.
