A brief history of Putney.      Putney was at one time a small hamlet on the south bank of the River Thames, it lies about four miles from central London. It has a long history going back approximately 1000 years, originally named Putelei,  it was referred as such in the Doomsday Book of 1086.   T here is evidence that the Romans were settled in the area nearly 2000 years ago.
